The journey continues as I cross the Connecticut River, marking Day 129 of my Appalachian Trail (AT) hike. The excitement of entering New Hampshire is palpable, but the challenge of the final stretch looms ahead. The 9-mile hike through the woods in Norwich, Vermont, was a test of endurance against the relentless mosquitoes, a battle even DEET spray couldn't fully win. Yet, the town's charm offered a brief respite from the biting insects.
As I ventured out onto the road, the sense of relief was palpable. Norwich, with its lovely atmosphere, provided a welcome break from the isolation of the woods. The trail, however, remained elusive, leading me north to the Connecticut River and the town of Hanover, New Hampshire. The realization that I was in the second-to-last state on the AT added a layer of significance to my journey.
My path soon led me to Dartmouth College, a prestigious institution that added to the rich tapestry of my hiking experience. A chance encounter with a trail angel, a woman who generously offered me a place to stay for two nights, showcased the kindness and generosity of some individuals. Her home tour and the comfort of a clean shower and a fresh set of clothes were a welcome treat.
The campus buzzed with life as students arrived for the new year, a stark contrast to the solitude of the woods. The energy and vibrancy of Hanover provided a refreshing change of pace. As the sun set, I bid farewell to Vermont, both mentally and physically, grateful for the challenges it presented but also for its natural beauty.
